ASIS Certification Process and FAQ's

Introduction

The purpose of this page is to guide you through how to study for the ASIS International CPP and PSP certifications with the ARC Training International Academy for Security Management, on behalf of ASIS Chapter 208.

About CPP and PSP

The CPP certification is designed for security managers and consultants who want an internationally-recognised advanced –level credential in security management.  Almost 10,000 security professionals have undertaken the CPP, which is recognised by Buckinghamshire New University as part of its NQF Level 7 Certificate in Security Management (postgraduate level).

The PSP certification is the perfect choice if your job entails, either as an end user or consultant, the selection, specification, design, project management, evaluation, survey, or installation of physical security systems, such as locks and barriers, intrusion detection, CCTV, access control systems, contraband systems etc.

You can learn more about each certification by downloading the Certification Handbook.

The Preparation Programmes

ARC has developed preparation courses for the CPP and PSP certifications. Each comprises 4 mandatory distance learning tasks, followed by a one-week intensive classroom course. The dates and fees can be found below. Typically, there are two CPP preparations programmes and one CPP preparation programmes each year.

The courses are conducted on a non-commercial basis, and are open to any ASIS member.

The Alternatives

There are other study options available, and there is no requirement for you to take a course prior to sitting the examinations, but ARC’s courses have a proven track record. In 2010 100% of ARC-trained PSP candidates and 85% of ARC-trained CPP candidates passed first time. This is considerably higher than the average pass rate and ARC has been recognised by ASIS International for its exceptional results.

The Process

Step 1: Before committing to a certification exam, the first task is to check your eligibility. For CPP click here, and for PSP click here.

Step 2 : The next stage is to become a member of ASIS International, if you are not already. You can do this by clicking on this link. You are not obliged to join ASIS in order to sit the examinations, but it makes economic sense to do so. You will quickly recover your application fee in examination registration and reading materials discounts.

Step 3: You should then contact ARC for details of the next preparation programme. Dates can be found here.

Step 4: Now is the time to register for the examination. You can do this via the following link. Don’t be put off if you submit and don’t hear for a while. Also, ASIS may ask for more information if your application form is not detailed, or perhaps shrouded in military or police jargon. This should not deter you from progressing to the next stage.

Step 5: Purchase the respective reading materials. For CPP the up-to-date list can be found at this link. For PSP the up-to-date list can be found here.

For European candidates many of the reference materials can be purchased more quickly from Amazon. Books are also cheaper as Amazon shipping costs are low. The POA Manual (essential for CPPs) must be purchased from ASIS, and ARC strongly advises you to opt for the online version, and not the hard copy. POA purchase details can be found at this link.

For PSPs, you may be able to download the ASIS Guidelines for free. Each ASIS member can download any guideline once for free.

Step 6: Book your course with ARC by contacting Janet and be sure to attend the relevant Orientation Day that takes place at the beginning of each course. More details can be found at on the CPP and PSP web page.

Step 7: Give your partner your credit cards, buy the kids a new bike each, and then begin your study!

Your Commitment

Both examinations are hard to pass, so before you commit you should be sure that you can devote the necessary time to study. This may be the hardest study regime that you have undertaken since your school examinations. Each of the four monthly distance learning tasks require at least 10-15 hours of work, and the total monthly study time including necessary reading is about 30-40 hours. If you are unable to keep up with the tasks, you will be asked to defer to the next programme. To ensure that candidates are at the same, advanced level of preparation when they arrive on the classroom phase of the course the four distance learning tasks are mandatory.

About the Examination

Booking the examination is your responsibility. You should do this as soon as you get confirmation from ASIS that you have been accepted as an examination candidate. The London centre, for example, can get fully booked at least five weeks in advance. If you come on the course without having booked your exam, it could be some weeks before you can sit, and this would significantly lessen your chances of passing.

The exam is a computer-based test, and you can take it at one of several centres in the UK or overseas. The test sites can be found at the following link. The CPP examination will comprise at least 200 multiple choice questions, and the PSP at least 120 questions.
